The Complete Guide to Chess Pieces

Understand how each chess piece moves, attacks, and coordinates. Learn standard piece point valuations, unique special rules like en passant and castling, and grandmaster strategic deployment techniques.

♟

The Pawn

Standard Value: 1 Point

The soul of chess. Pawns move straight forward one square at a time, with the optional privilege of advancing two squares on their very first move from their home rank. Pawns capture one square diagonally forward.

Special Mechanics:
  • En Passant: If an opposing pawn advances two squares past your pawn's capture square, you may capture it on the immediate next turn as if it moved only one square.
  • Promotion: Reaching the 8th rank transforms the pawn into any piece of your choice (almost always a Queen).
Winning Strategy: Create passed pawns that have no enemy pawns blocking their path to the promotion rank. Maintain solid diagonal pawn chains to shield your territory.
♞

The Knight

Standard Value: 3 Points (Minor Piece)

The trickiest tactical piece on the board. The knight moves in an "L-shape": two squares in one cardinal direction and then one square perpendicular. It is the only piece in chess capable of jumping over other friendly or enemy pieces.

Key Characteristics:
  • Always switches square color with every single move (light square to dark square and vice versa).
  • Excels in closed, congested positions with locked pawn centers where longer-range pieces are blocked.
Winning Strategy: Plant your knights on central "outposts" (squares protected by friendly pawns that cannot be attacked by enemy pawns). Exploit multi-piece forks targeting the enemy King and Queen simultaneously.
♝

The Bishop

Standard Value: 3 Points (Minor Piece)

A high-velocity sniper. Bishops move diagonally any number of unoccupied squares. Because they move exclusively along diagonals, each bishop is permanently bound to the square color (light or dark) upon which it started the game.

Key Characteristics:
  • Fianchetto: Placing the bishop on b2, g2, b7, or g7 creates enormous pressure across the longest diagonals of the board.
  • The Bishop Pair: Having both light and dark squared bishops against an opponent with only one or none is worth an estimated +0.5 pawn strategic bonus.
Winning Strategy: Open up the center by trading pawns to grant your bishops maximum diagonal range. Avoid "bad bishops" that are restricted by friendly pawns fixed on the same color.
♜

The Rook

Standard Value: 5 Points (Major Piece)

The heavy artillery of the chessboard. Rooks move in straight horizontal ranks and vertical files across any number of unoccupied squares. Rooks represent major pieces and become decisive late in the middlegame and throughout the endgame.

Special Mechanics:
  • Castling: Moves the King two squares toward the Rook while the Rook hops over to the King's adjacent square (Kingside O-O or Queenside O-O-O).
  • Requires neither piece to have moved prior, and no squares in between under enemy check.
Winning Strategy: Occupy open and semi-open files. Connect both rooks on the back rank and invade the enemy's 7th rank (the "pig on the 7th") to slaughter opposing pawns and restrict the enemy King.
♛

The Queen

Standard Value: 9 Points (Supreme Force)

The most versatile and devastating offensive piece on the board. The Queen combines the movement powers of both the Rook and the Bishop, moving any number of unhindered squares horizontally, vertically, or diagonally in a single turn.

Key Characteristics:
  • Capable of attacking from 27 different squares simultaneously from the center of an empty board.
  • A primary target for enemy pins, forks, and development attacks if mobilized prematurely.
Winning Strategy: Keep the Queen safe during the early opening moves. Coordinate the Queen behind attacking minor pieces to create unstoppable mating nets and tactical batteries.
♚

The King

Value: Invaluable (Game Decider)

The heart and monarch of the army. The King moves one square in any direction (orthogonal or diagonal). The King can never step onto an attacked square. If attacked with no legal escape, checkmate occurs and the game ends immediately.

Key Characteristics:
  • Opening & Middlegame: A liability that must be castled early and sheltered behind an unblemished pawn shield.
  • Endgame: Transforms into an aggressive attacking piece equivalent in strength to a minor piece (+3.5 points).
Winning Strategy: Master King Opposition and Triangulation in endgames to shepherd friendly pawns to promotion while denying enemy king advances.
